It is called "Minecraft Structure Planner", it is pretty helpful if you need to make things like domes or large circles. Otherwise you just draw out your building level by level, nice to be able to see it as you go though.
You can even paste your designs into game worlds, I can host a world with the lighthouse (and possibly more of my own schematics soon) if you'd like to check it out/critique. There's a lot of detail work needed on it, rob suggested wood accents and I agree.
I'll probably end up making a schematic for the Alexandrian Library for Doozie sometime this week. We have a spot around -1600, -10000 that we think matches Alexandria pretty well.

Not enough sand! If I have my way, we're gonna end up with a bunch of buildings from the centre of ancient Alexandria. So far I've squared up and drained the 80x80 blocks for the lighthouse. Then the mainland!
