Gold vs Diamond

Ok, I've made the following discovery recently by both testing, and by digging through the damage values listed in the minecraft.jar files.
That a diamond sword has the 1st strongest durability, but only the 2nd strongest damage per hit.
And a gold sword has the 5th strongest durability, but the 1st strongest damage per hit.
The above can be proven in Single Player by getting an "infinite tool-durability" mod and seeing how many hits it takes to kill each type of mob using a golden, and then a diamond sword. This is also proof as to why Zombie Pigmen seem to kick you ass so quickly.
And now, the point emerges. I want to know 2 things:
1) Does the above idea about golden and diamond sword make sense to you too?
2)Which sword should I give my guard-npc?
