Latency

Just a heads up, I don't know whether this is because of my location (Northwest Ohio), or what have you, but I'm getting really bad latency / ping time on minecraft.novylen.net. I ran a ping test just to be sure of other sites, and they were ok, so I'm fairly confident it's not my network. I was seeing more dropped packets and heavier latency earlier this afternoon, but here's what I got on a random ping I just ran before posting this. Any suggestions as to what I can do to lessen this, if anything at all, would be appreciated
- Thanks, Lhowon
Code: Select all
37 packets transmitted, 36 packets received, 2.7% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 815.232/1201.100/1785.129/257.146 ms

Yes, I'm getting the same issue. It starts as soon as the server software starts up, and worse as people connect.
I'm honestly baffled by it. It shouldn't be using enough bandwidth to slow things down appreciably with one or two users connected, the CPU and memory use is no different from yesterday, and disk I/O doesn't seem unusual.

As a reference run the older server and see how that benchmarks?

I don't think I can.
I guess I could generate a fresh world and set aside this one for testing.
My outgoing pipe is pretty much redlined at maximum according to MRTG.

Today has been really demoralizing.

So is this a simple lack of bandwidth/monthly bandwidth cap, or just mysterious gnomes in the cables? Either way, I really appreciate your effort rbos, you're a top notch server admin considering the situation.
