Alexandria

Post by Doozy »

Devov and I have started work on the reconstruction of ancient Alexandria. There's already a post of the Lighthouse on Pharos Island, so I won't add those pics here, instead this will be for the city proper. Before we begin, I apologize for the tiny pictures. They were too big from their original addresses, and photobucket uploaded them too small. Click the links for original size images.

Here are a couple of maps, and an artist's rendition of what the streets may have looked like:

And here is our buildsite:

My pet part of this project is the Library. It should be fairly simple to render into blocks:

and the interior:

Here is the remains of the Library at Celsus, which I think would have been a contemporary:

And of course, Cleopatra's Needles:

Aside from the topography and the Obelisk, this is all the work of archeaologists and artists. Also our site isn't a perfect match, so we've got some wiggle room. I want to do Alexandria between the time of Alexander (the Great) and Cleopatra, so it will be mostly egyptian and greek architecture. I'll add buildings as my architect (Devov) works them up, and when we know how many we want, I'll work on the street plan. Materials will be predominantly sandstone and smooth stone half-slabs.

I've taken out a small loan, and will buy all of your sand. I'm not adverse to digging it up myself, however, so don't bother trying to corner the market and raise prices. I'm told 1 coin for 2 stacks is fair trade.

See you when bukkit updates!

I think I'm finally done with this ship, captain's quarters and VIP rooms were built by Doozie. /wxgo AlexTest if you'd like to check it out. I plan on doing docks, market, drydock, aqueducts, and amphitheater next. After that I might actually go back and do some buildings in the main city area.

Saw that ship of yours Devov. Let me say, I'm most THOROUGHLY impressed.

Saw it on the map. Thought to myself, "that has got to be a pasted-in schematic" because of how perfect everything was. The sail, the oars, the brilliantly curved bow/stern and for goodness sake it's diagonal! So I went over to creative and took a peek. By golly. Looks better in person. That thing will dwarf any city it sails to!

Props to Doozie with those creative rooms. Both eye candy and functional. Also, melons.

Thanks Pach. That's quite the compliment coming from you. You have a pretty amazing little corner of creative as well :D

Yeah that thing is way out of scale. I built it as small as I could, but it is still ~4X larger than it should be.

Here's an early library schematic I made in a structure planner a long time ago back before we had creative. I was trying to make it historically accurate, but I didn't like it (it is boring and undetailed) so I abandoned it. Now that we have more stone colored blocks I might revisit. I may just take some design cues from the real deal and then design my own using a few of the original elements.
