Mob Spawn Rate

The mob spawn rate has been put up recently for some reason that I dont recall. At its current rate, I think that it is too high to go about normal minecraft activities i.e. Building and exploring. Today I was killed probably 10 times in 2 hours, in my own, fairly well lit up town. Before I was killed, I counted 50+ mobs in one direction, I couldnt count them all because I was killed by a creeper behind me... Could the spawn rate be lowered to what it originally was, or to somewhere between where it was last time and what it is now, as it is fairly annoying losing all of your XP every 10 minutes.

If anyone else thinks its too high, please comment.
